Anime: Mayoi Neko Overrun!

Anime’s, I’ve concluded, fall into a few distinct categories when it comes to their balance between plot and character.

Strong Plot and Strong Character – Bleach , Ookami Kakushi
Strong Plot and Weak Characters – Mai Otome
Strong Characters and Weak Plot – Arakawa under the Bridge, K-ON!

In many cases the anime’s that fall into these categories are quite good and very successful. As long as either the Plot, Characters, or Both are strong you are pretty much guaranteed a good quality anime.

Mayoi Neko Overrun, however, is threatening to fall into that dreaded 4th category, Weak Plot AND Weak Characters.

Plot:

Takumi Tsuzuki works in the family bakery of his adopted sister, Otome Tsuzuki, with his childhood friend Fumino Serizawa. Otome has a habit of going to the ends of the earth to help those in need. One day she returns home with a mysterious cat-girl named Nozomi Kiriya that she’s brings in because she has nowhere else to go. Nozomi turns out to be a wiz in the bakery and begins to turn the struggling family bakery, the Stray Cats, around.

Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy this anime, it’s just that it seems too shallow and unguided at this point. There doesn’t seem to be much of a coherent plot, it’s more like a series of half-baked sub plots. You have the lonely rich kid (Umenomori-chan), the mysterious cat-girl (Kiriya-chan), the childhood friend’s (Tsuzuki-san and Serizawa-chan), and the failing family bakery (Stray Cats).

You have all of these sub-plots going all over the place and none of them are connected in any way and it just feels like the audience is getting stretched out to their limits. The worst part is that the audience spends so much time going from sub-plot to sub-plot that there is given no time for proper character development. This weakens the anime as a whole.

Here's what I want to see.

Despite my grievances with this anime, I will still watch it, hoping that it gets better along the way. I hope that the storylines get thinned out some so more emphases can be put on character development. If not I’ll just feel that I’ve wasted much of my time watching this anime, and that’s a feeling that I don’t want to have.

  • Umenomori-chan's club's purpose should be discovering the origins of Kiriya-chan. She's a cat girl you know, that's pretty mysterious to me.
  • Put more emphasis on Tsuzuki-san and Serizawa-chan's relationship. Give the audience something, a pantsu shot, bloody nose, something!
  • Put the situation of the Stray Cats on the back burner, no need to talk about it, the Bakery is doing fine, end of story, let's move on
