Anime: K-ON!!

There's so much that I could say that raves about K-ON!! I could talk about the fun loving characters including the absent minded Yui and the timid Mio. I could talk about the stories about the innocence of youth and the aspirations for the future. I could even talk about the music, how it literally takes over the show, not simply due to it's quantity but it's quality as well.

I could go on for hours, but to sum it up, K-ON!! is Awesome.

Plot

K-On!'s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join their school's light music club to try to save it from being abolished. However, they are the only members of the club, and at first Yui Hirasawa, the main character, has no experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music. Eventually, she learns how to be an excellent guitar player. The rest of the club helps her to buy a guitar, and they perform successfully at the school festival. Since then Yui, bassist Mio Akiyama, drummer Ritsu Tainaka and keyboardist Tsumugi Kotobuki spend their school days practicing, performing, or just hanging out together. One year later, the club welcomes another guitarist, an underclassman named Azusa Nakano.

Before I ever saw the first season of K-ON! I was never much of a fan of the whole "slice of life" genre. I saw it as simply an excuse to make an anime without having to put forth the effort to make a decent plot. After watching the first season I can safely say that I'm hooked on this show.

I don't know what got me hooked. I suppose it was a combination of things. The characters are very well written and spot on for their types. You have the ultra shy Mio, the absent minded but talented Yui, the air-head rich girl Mugi, the headstrong but not thinking Ritsu, and the oh so responsible Azusa and Ui. The characters are portrayed so strongly which makes the viewer inherently committed to watching them grow. Their aspirations, dreams, success, and failures, become your aspirations, dreams, success, and failures. It's that emotional connection that puts K-ON!! head and shoulders above it's rivals this season.

If I were to say anything bad about this show was that the first season was rushed through too fast IMO. We could have had 3 full season of K-ON!! if it wasn't for the fact that the first season blew through 2 whole years of high school. I suppose I can't really blame the writers in doing that, they didn't know how much of a success K-ON!! was going to be. You still can't feel a little disappointed in that a whole season was missed.

Can this anime go on for another season? Maybe, if the writers begin putting more emphases on the younger characters, Ui, Azusa, and Jun maybe the viewers can become as attached to them as we become attached to Yui, Mugi, Mio, and Ritsu. The maybe we could have a 3rd season.

I won't keep my hopes up though, if anything I'm going to simply watch and enjoy all that is K-ON!! To live in the moment, and enjoy life as it comes to you. That's what makes K-ON!! awesome, and frankly we wouldn't want it any other way.
